Discussion Question 9

Each student in the classes have their own specific way of communicating. What are ways that you see students communicating what they want and how they feel, and what have you successfully done to keep a student communicating with you?

  1. I see students communicating by using hand signs, pictures, electronics, smiling and talking or pointing. To keep a student communicating with me I will talk to them and ask them things and try to keep the conversation interesting. That normally works but if the student really does not want to talk and they need to for their work I just keep trying to get them to do what they need to and to get rid of distractions. If their attention wanders I compliment them or ask them a question to get back their attention.

  2. I see students everyday communicate in so many different ways. In this day in technology there are many different ways to communicate one is the students use electronics to help us better understand what they are saying. Another one is that the students also tend to point to different things in the room. What I have done as a peer tutor is I try to really get the students involved by looking them in the eye and asking them stuff about there weekend or what they are going to do after school. I feel that if I try to make it so that they don't get bored and have fun. But when it is time to learn I help as best I can.

  3. I see students mainly communicate with facial expressions, electronics, and hand signials. After a student tries to communicate with me I respond, showing that I realized the student communicated with me so in the futer they will communicate again. This is easiest with electronics because you can understand what they want clearly.

  4. There are many ways sudents communicate elctrionics, and even talkin just in person. Like communcate through my cellphones but when i am in your class i communicate alot through eye contact. Like i can talk to kiara through eye contact and she will understand like what i am talking about.

  5. Now that I think about it, Max is the only student in Ms. Deihl's class who has to use electronics to communicate. I can normally just talk to Rebecca, Lorenzo and Kiara. During free time, I have I chance to make a joke, and they keep up with it. For example, every time Lorenzo says hi, he makes a joke of calling me Kennedy (I know he is joking because he would go on to say that he was me, and that he couldn't find me.) I think being able to make jokes is important in communication, because it really shows that they aren't any different from the rest of us.

  6. Alot of kids have diffrent ways to talk to one another. Max is really the only one who has a computer to interact to people. other kids sometimes piont to things that they want or you just have to guide them a little bit so that they can tell you what they want. For them to keep on talking to them you can treat them with the respect that they deserve.

  7. Communication is key in this class. In order for a student to really understand what you are trying to get them to do or teach them something you might need to say it in some differnet ways. Every student in this class has a differenet way of communicating. When the students get upset some times they just put their head down. That tells us that they don't want to be bothered and might need a moment to get themself back together. One of the students in Ms. Diehl's class uses a head mouse and a computer to communicate his needs and wants. To keep a student communicating with me, I talk to them, ask them questions and sometimes make jokes with them. It is important for everyone to communicate with each other so we can know their opinions and their needs.

Max he knows what you are saying. So I just ask himand I wisper to tim and he talk back or I say tell me in a full sentance. Maddie I just talk to her and she talks back. and yhat is how I comunicate.

  9. In school I see kids using electronics, hand signals, pictures, charts, talking, and noises to communicate. To keep a student communicating I ask them how they are and what they need or would like so I don't have to guess. Having a conversation is also important and making it an intresting subject should be kept in mind as well. I really like the charts that Becca uses although I am not with her much when she takes my hand and points to something it is easy to tell what she wants. It is important to communicate to astablish a friendship and also because students will need communication for later in life as well.
Max on the other hand has his computer to communicate, although he sometimes is not feeling like using it so he will whine or get upset because he wants something. When this happens I ask him to use his computer, because thats what it is there for and it will be less frusturating for me and himself. Getting Students to communicate with you now is really important not just because it's nice and friendly but it shows that you care about how they or feeling and want to meet there needs by helping them out. I try to ask students how they are feeling and what's up as much as possible so that they have a chance to give an answer and feel like someone outside there zone.

  10. I see a lot of students comunicating using electronics, hand signals, pictures, smiling and other things. If I am talking to a student for their work or something else i will talk to them by asking questions about what they did over the weekend or what they are going to do. if they are talking for their work and they start to wonder and look other places i will do what ever i can to stop it. If they are really bored I'll say something totally random or funny to make them laugh and make them want to talk to me more often.

  11. I personally belive that the way you see students communicate all depends on the student. I mean, students that aren't in Ms. Kripton & Ms. Deihl's classes act different depending on social and learning skills. Why should students in these two classes be any different? But, the main four ways I see students communicate is physical, vocal, facial, and electronics. By physical, I mean when student express anger, sadness or overall unhappiness with a hit, scrath, or bite. The students in Ms. Kriptons class are more likely to do this, do to lack of other ways of communication like Maddie, Tim and Becca. By vocal I mean not only saying their needs as many students in Ms. Deihl's class can do but also yelling, screaming and crying which happens often to students who don't know what else to do to express anger. Electronics are used by people like Molly, Max, and Becca who can only make noises without talkers, computers, van-gaurds, or step-by-steps. They can use these for anything from school work like Max, to laughing at a joke like Molly. Facial expression can be used by someone like Max, Molly or Becca to show what they want through a smile or a frown when electronics won't work. Overall, students communicate in many ways, weither by a hit of the head, a smile given, a word said, or a button pushed.

I've found that asking whats wrong, but not lingering on the problem helps students communicate any bad feelings. If I ask what's wrong, or how are they, they know I care, but if I make a big deal about helping them, then then they will cause more problems for more attention. And, some like Becca M. is more likly to communicate with you if you are more a friend then a teacher, you are there to help make learning fun for them, but still get things done. If you tell a kid "go do this" or "you need to do this this way" they think "why should I listen to someone who is my age or a year or two older?" By saying "Let's do this, that way that will be more fun" they want to do the work because now it's not work, it's fun. That way, they listen to us.

  12. As a peer tutor I 've seen many ways of communicating. The first is when madiline is angry she sings or uses sign language to express her feelings or calm down. Tim is always jolly but his main way of commmunication is by finishing words. Molly and some others use buttons to communicate. In Ms.Diel's class everyone usually comunicates in english whether typing or saying but sometimes they point to pictures to express their feelings. I've communicated to all the students in all the ways I can, but I cant do sign language so thats stoppiung me a little.

  13. I have seen the children in class communictaing in many different and unique ways. Most of them will use their words but some cannot speak, and some just dont feel like talking sometimes. When something is wrong with cetain student, they use little pictures taped on their desk and touch the correct reason they are upset. This way i know that something is wrong and we can fix it. I have also seen the children use electroncics to speak for them, as well as their body language. To keep a conversation with them, i just keep asking them questions and allow them time to think about their answer then ask me a question. I give them the best answer i can thnk of and the conversation continues.

  14. Each student in my class communicate very diferently. Becca has her springboard which when she toughes what she wants on it, it tells me. sometimes when she wants something she will just grab it, but i tell her "you have to ask" then i give her her board and she touches " i want...." and then she touches what she wants. to make her feel like shes not the only one that has to use it, i also communicate with her through it.

  15. I think most of the students have their own unigue way of communicating. They have expressions that they use or sometimmes electronic devises which enable them to communicate. In some instances though, to really get to know a student you have to communicate with in way that they feel comfortable. For instance, when talking to Becca or to Tim, if you ask them to do something, and they don't respond or do something else, getting frustrated about it will not help. If you snap back at them not only will you feel upset, but they will also. I think that it is really neat to figure what makes each student happy and makes them want to talk or communicate with you.

  16. Each student communicates differently. Some of the students can simply tell me what’s wrong or what they’re feeling, others have to be pushed to talk about their feelings. Some kids talk through electronic devices (springboards and boggle switch?). Some students use pictures to tell us how there are feeling.

  17. I see students communicating in a lot of different ways. There's Mrs. Diehl's kids who can pretty much communicate with you using their voices, they can talk to you naturally. Then theres Max and Molly who uses computers to communicate with us. Theres Becca who communicates by touching signs and or using that red computer box thing. Theres Madeline who can communicate with her voice. Then there's Tim who can commmnicate with using his voice. All the students in Mrs.Diehl's and Mrs. Kripton's class communicate in their own special way.

  18. I've found that there are many different ways students communicate. Students use electronics, hand signals, pictures/ charts, noises, or even just talk to you. I try to ask questions to keep a conversation going. Some yes or no questions and others questions like what did you do over the weekend. For Becca E., I'd ask her questions she could answer on her springboard, while for Becca M., I'd ask her questions like what did you do last night. I think it's very important to communicate with the students because I get to know them better and social skills will be extremly useful for them when they get older.

  19. well when i am with becca e. she will talk through her communicater and like yesterday we were reading a leapfrog book with the pen thing and she wanted to hold the pen and turn the pages so she was doing sign language telling me that she was mad or angry. so i told her she needed to tell me what she wanted and not just have a tempertantrum. so she said, "i turn page" so i let her turn the page then she started to reach for the pen thing and when i wouldnt give it to her she got mad again so i told her to tell me if she wanted to read by herself and she went on her communicater and said,"by myself" so i let her. she calmed down after that. but everyone has a diferent way of communicating. all of the students in ms. deihls including madeline but not max talks. max uses his computer and molly uses a cummuicater like becca. tim also talks but not as well. he is working on it.
